Here are a few things we take into consideration to ensure the right tree is selected and planted in the right area with proper irrigation.
Space for Growth. A newly planted tree needs room to mature without excessive pruning. As such, you should check for power lines, buildings, fences and other trees. If the horizontal space is limited, one should choose a tree that stays tight and grows tall.
Soil Condition. Most trees to best in soil that is able to drain. The hole for the tree should be 2-3 times the size of the root ball for best results. Never bury the root flare as this will suffocate the tree. The first tree root should be 1-3″ above the ground.
Irrigation. Trees should be planted so that the root ball and basal root flare do not interfere with the irrigation system over time. Otherwise, tree roots might eventually close off the water flow over time, which would then harm the health of your tree.
Growth rates vs. hardiness. Fast growing trees are great, especially if you are inpatient. The downside is that these trees tend to be weaker and can break under heave snow loads or winds. Fast growing trees should be planted away from sidewalks, buildings, and power lines.
Water consumption. The amount of water needed by trees will vary. One should not plant trees with a low need for water in the middle of a heavily irrigated lawn or at the bottom of a hill. In contrast, trees with a high need for water should be planted where excess watering is desired and possible. In dry seasons, additional watering is required to keep a tree healthy. Trees exposed to drought stress are more susceptible diseases and insects.
