Why Concrete?

If concrete costs more than asphalt, why pour concrete? How do concrete driveways and patios compare with asphalt?

These are valid questions and questions that have solid answers.

  1. Concrete is more durable than asphalt.
  2. Assuming both are installed and maintained properly, concrete driveways and patios can last 10 to 20 years longer than asphalt. Even then, Asphalt will need more frequent repairs than concrete. Regular sealing will go a long way in keeping concrete holding up and looking nice for decades. This amounts to savings for you.

  3. Concrete can withstand heat and can be protected against the cold.
  4. In areas where summers get hot, asphalt can become sticky or gooey. At 108 degree weather, asphalt, which gets hotter than the air, can rise to 160 degrees. Hot enough to get soft and also burn your feet. While in that condition if someone drives over it can become disfigured. Concrete, on the other hand, can withstand those high temperature, but…. it does not like the extreme cold. The good news is that, reinforced with steel rods or mesh, concrete has increases tensile strength during freezing and, again, sealing will prevent salt, de-icing chemicals and freezing water from breaking down your concrete. Thus, a more lasting product.

  5. Concrete lends itself to more variety.
  6. Asphalt is black with the sun turning it gray over time. That’s all. Concrete has lots of options. It can be colored with pretty much any color you choose. Concrete can also be stamped to look like colored brick, shiny stones, waxed tiles, rough cobble, sandy slate even your choice of wood. It can also be built up to make steps, sitting walls, fire pits, a barbecue and whatever your imagination can conceive.

In short, the features that make concrete so appealing is that it is durable and that can be shaped and colored in any way desired.
